Roulette is one of the all-time most popular casino games, arguably the most iconic.

If you have ever visited a land-based casino, the tables with live croupiers surrounded by players are always part of the life soul of the casino floor with plenty of chatter.

Whenever the average person thinks of casino games or when casinos are advertised, the roulette table will more often than not be the central image.

According to statistics released by the UK Gambling Commission, 44% of people in the UK participate in gambling every month. Roulette is the second-highest-played online casino game, with 13% of all players.

One of the most interesting aspects of roulette is the dealer movements.

They usually have a structured way of talking and moving, but sometimes, you might pick up on some interesting subtleties. Knowing more about all the roulette dealer moves will help you to be more confident and in control around the table.

The Role of the Roulette Dealer/Croupier Explained

Although many live casinos and players call the person hosting the roulette game the host, this is not strictly the correct term.

  • Dealer: A dealer is commonly used in various card games, such as poker, blackjack, and baccarat.
  • Croupier: On the other hand, a croupier oversees games such as roulette or dice games. Of course, this is because there are no cards to be dealt.

In most cases, the Croupier spins the wheel, counterspins the ball, calls for players to place their bets, and calls all bets off. He or she will also evaluate which players won, pay the winners, and rake in the remaining chips on the table from losing bets.

It has become commonplace for roulette dealers to communicate with players through body signals rather than words. These movements make up some of the interesting dealer moves that we will analyse in this article.

Croupier Tricks to Look Out For

Honestly, if you are looking for ways to cheat the system or swing the odds of roulette in your favour, there are none. Well, at least in live casino there aren’t. There are some signals in land-based casinos you read, but you can take many of these as a pinch of salt. Yet, it is always fun to look into them!

  • The Croupier Can Change the Rhythm: A dealer who changes the rhythm of their ball release can do so intentionally to break up the players’ flow. This can cause players to adjust their betting speed and possibly make different decisions. Something to keep an eye on.
  • Visual Distractions: There are cases where dealers can create a bit of distraction, sometimes through conversation, or often through some form of visual distraction. This can cover up some kind of sleight of hand or something that the dealer does before releasing the ball.
  • Delaying the Release: A common dealer move is to delay the release of the ball. Doing this will allow the wheel to slow down a bit and it makes it easier to predict where the ball will land. Keeping an eye on how the dealer spins the wheel and when they release the ball can help you catch on to this popular trick.
  • Using table rules: There are quite a few rules around the roulette table. Dealers can use these to cover up some of their sneaky tricks. For example, bets cannot change after the ball drops. With this rule, you cannot change your bet even if you catch on to something.

Live Roulette: These tricks are not something you will come across in live casino. Most large land-based casinos will not use them either. However, if you find yourself in small outlandish casino venue with roulette tables, then it is worth knowing about these tricks!

Auto-Roulette Abolishes Croupier Tricks
  • Auto-roulette wheels do not come with a croupier
  • They use virtual chips on a screen in land-based casinos
  • In live casino, you bet in the same way as a table with a croupier
  • After the results come, your screen auto updates your balance if you win
  • Popular auto roulette games include ‘Instant Roulette’
  • A popular multiplier roulette game is Pragmatic Play Live Mega Auto Roulette

The Two Most Commonly Found Roulette Wheels

The roulette wheel was created by the French mathematician Blaise Pascal. He was working on a motion system when he made the wheel that is used in casinos. It made its first appearance in French casinos in the late 1700s and the style of roulette we have today is still very similar to how it was originally. Today, we now have two versions of roulette.

  • American Roulette Wheel (97.3% RTP): American roulette has two zeroes coined as the double-zero roulette wheel, which has 38 numbers. For a more in depth explanation, see our European Roulette how-to guide.
  • European Roulette Wheel (94.74% RTP): While the European roulette has only a single-zero with a total of 37 numbers. For more information, see our American Roulette how-to guide.

Same Payouts: Both games of roulette offer the same payouts despite the difference in numbers on the wheels. This is why the American Roulette wheel has a lower RTP and higher house edge than the European version.

The Triple-Zero Roulette Trick

This is not something you will find in live casinos or virtual table games. Or at least I haven’t seen it. However, there are some casinos that will try to add a third zero. This is a ploy to lure in those that think more zeros means more fun. Of course, the payouts are still the same. I.e., odd/even 1:1, columns/dozens 1:2, split beys 1:17, and straight bets 35:1. Except rather than 27 numbers (singe-zero roulette) or 28 numbers (double-zero roulette), the triple-zero roulette wheel has 20 numbers.

On single-zero roulette tables that’s 2 more numbers getting in the way of you winning and on a double-zero table 1 more number. Therefore, the casino gains a higher edge. Avoid this tricky roulette game, and look for those with a single-zero to get the highest RTP and lowest house edge.

What is the RTP for Triple Zero Roulette?
Roulette Wheel RTP / House Edge
Single-Zero (37 Numbers) 97.3% / 2.7%
Double-Zero (38 Numbers) 94.74% / 5.26%
Triple-Zero (39 Numbers) 92.31% / 7.69%

Roulette Player Tricks to Look Out For

There are no tricks you can use in live casinos online to cheat the house. However, land-based casino players have implemented some cunning plans that still happen today. Some of these brazen souls do this despite the ever-watching eye in the sky.

  • Distracting the Dealer.Chip Switching: A player will distract the dealer as the ball slows on the wheel. Another player will remove his or her bet from the table because he or she knows the ball isn’t going to land on his or her number. Sometimes, the dealer does not see this happening. However, with bosses overlooking the games and cameras all over the casino, most players who try this trick get caught,
  • A Wheel Default: Some players will find backroom establishments that do not maintain their roulette wheels. Sometimes, there is a slight tilt or lean on the wheel, which means the ball lands more often in certain wheel sections. Players will bet on these numbers to increase their odds of winning.
  • Radio-Controlled Ball: There was one report of some cunning players engineering a ball that, when commanded, would fall off into a number slot. They won as long as their bets were in that section of the wheel! It’s a difficult scam to pull off as they need to swap the balls without the croupier knowing. However, the casino could also do the same in reverse to limit wins.
  • Laser Scanners: The Ritz Casino in London was taken for just over a million GBP after a team were able to use lasers to predict where the ball would land using the speed at which the ball travelled. As they could bet before the ball stopped, they won millions.

Why these tricks don’t work in live casino: The software always reports the RTP (Return to Player), so the percentage paid our by a roulette table. Each table has to report this to the licensing authority. If anything is off, then an investigation will reveal if foul play was in action. This could be costly to any live casino software provider and there is no news of roulette scams in online live casinos to date!
