There have been reports in South Africa that the government is closing all schools, restaurants, gyms, nightclubs, casinos, and other public places where activities that require close contact take place. This closure was necessitated by the need to curb the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic that had ravaged the world since last year, with South Africa taking a large hit.

These public places were previously opened after the initial closure when the virus first hit the country leading to a lockdown. After what seems to be a decline in the number of cases recorded, the country is faced with yet another trying time as they record new variants of the deadly virus.

Announcement from the President

On Sunday 27th of June, Cyril Ramphosa, South African President announced that the country will proceed to effect level 4 lockdown from Monday 28th July till at least July 11th.  Some other businesses like hotels are not affected by the closure, but rather they may have to offer reduced service and capacity and adhere to guidelines put in place by the government while ensuring social and physical distancing as best as possible.

However, the majority of other businesses such as the ones mentioned above will remain closed for two weeks when the review will be carried out. This is in addition to a ban on the sale of alcohol during the two weeks. There have been several concerns over the new Covid variant – Delta which was first recognized in India and has now been seen in several provinces in South Africa. The South African government is worried that the new variant could spread like wildfire especially as 605 of the new cases recorded are from the new Covid variant.

What Does This Mean?

With the closure of casinos and other businesses in South Africa, the players and bettors in the country will now have to opt for live dealer casinos where they will hope to seek refuge.  Live dealer casinos offer table games that are hitherto available in land-based brick and mortar casinos.

Many live casinos have sprung up during the pandemic with many casinos developing their live casino option. Players who enjoy playing casino games will have no problem locating the live casino games of their choice. Hopefully, this new strain of the virus will be curbed like the other and things will return to normalcy once again.
