On the Irish gambling columns news of the new gambling regulation bill is being welcomed by EU authorities too. By Q1 next year, the plan is for online casinos and sports books to apply for and gain an Irish online gambling licence. Adding to the licensing news is a major iGaming tech deal in the country just announced.

If you’d like to catch up on the specifics of Ireland’s iGaming and sports betting licensing, on 7 November last month, I published an article covering the topic.

EGBA Praises the Introduction of Ireland’s Gambling Regulation Bill

EGBA, which represents leading European online gambling operators, has welcomed the publication of the Gambling Regulation Bill by the Irish government. This also comes as no surprise because the EGBA has long advocated a self-exclusion register as an essential safety net against gambling harm.

The Irish gambling bill is the latest step in a multi-year reform process in the Republic of Ireland. It will also bring the country into line with the other European member states in the development of modern regulations for the digital age. Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, France, and Italy are other EU members already operating domestic licensing authorities.

As for the official introduction of the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, it will be established in 2023. It will be in charge of investigating and regulating all gambling activities in the country and will have the power to impose sanctions on any land-based or online gambling establishments found to be in breach of statutory obligations.

Most notably, the new Irish regulations will introduce a national self-exclusion register for online gambling as well as a social fund to tackle problem gambling treatment. Essentially, it is exactly the same as Gamcare used in the UK whereby players that self-exclude from one casino cannot log or sign up to another casino and play real money. In other words, the ban is countrywide.

The bill also includes a ban on credit cards being used to make payments for gambling, and a ban on gambling advertisements from being displayed between 5.30 am and 9 pm, and on social media. This could affect all forms of gambling promotion. It will also prohibit gambling advertising that is intended to appeal to children.

GIG Signs New Commercial Tech Deal

Earlier this week, Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) signed a triumvirate of contracts with News Corporation (NASDAQ: NOC) to deliver sports betting and casino content solution to the tabloid owner’s UK and Ireland casino and sports betting sites.

GIG will integrate into The Sun Casino’s front end, as well as other Sun-branded gambling platforms. It will then offer sports and casino content as well as promotions to mobile and desktop players.

News of GIG’s new deal comes on the heels of a recent announcement that GiG will be expanding its portfolio of offerings into Spain through a new partnership with land casino operator StarCasino. GIG has an impressive list of partnerships with Unibet, Betway and Betfred, as well as a handful of smaller outfits.

The company’s track record for innovation is strong, and its recent expansion into other jurisdictions should only improve its already enviable position in the regulated online gambling sector. The company has a strong reputation in the casino and gaming industry and boasts a UKGC gaming licence and will surely take on the new Irish GRAI licence once it becomes available next year.

News Corp UK & Ireland’s flagship website is The Sun Casino. The company also operates the popular English tabloid (not a newspaper as it calls itself) that publishes rumours and gossip. However, the tabloid does print and publish factual sports news and horse racing odds as well as race cards, which I will say I enjoy. With its tabloid arguably the most popular in the UK, The Sun Casino has a hefty online following with many of the iGaming and sports betting platform’s members parts of the brand’s army of millions of readers.
