UKGC Award

Soon after releasing the long-awaited UK gambling white paper the UKGC wins the Great Place to Work Award issued by ‘Great Place to Work’ (Images courtesy of gamblingcommission.gov.uk)

The UK Gambling Commission has been handed an unlikely award. When I say unlikely, I mean one that is not part of the gambling entertainment industry.

Great Place to Work® is an organisation that specialises in researching work environments. It researches work culture, and leadership, and looks into employee satisfaction using ever-changing metrics to keep up with the times.

In its recent round of awards, it saw the UK Gambling Commission as worthy of an award that denotes the non-profit government workplace as one of the best employers in Europe.

It’s funny because I imagined it as a hectic and pressurised workplace with mounting government pressure placed on the employees. Also, with the latest delay after delay from the white paper saga, this news surprised me. Not to mention the constant pressure of having to monitor online and land-based gambling companies. Maybe dishing out million UK Sterling fines is fun! (Just a joke).

Yet, despite recent pressure, it seems the UKGC’s offices are a happy place with good leadership, and satisfied employees and boast a sound work culture. That’s great news because UK gamblers rely on these people to guarantee they are protected under UK gambling laws.

The award also took into account areas such as a hybrid working approach and adopting new technology. On top of this events were another consideration, and you have to admit, attending networking events such as ICE London 2023 must have been a lot of fun.

Has the UKGC’s work culture spilt over to UK gambling firms?

With its happy work environment, the culture should reflect on the gambling industry as a whole. And if you look at some of the awards won for safer gambling, many of the companies are UK operations.

  • Mr Green Casino – EGR Marketing and Innovation Awards – Safe Gambling Operator (UK operator). This is also a casino we have tested here on Livecasinocentral – check out the Mr Green Live Casino review for more information.
  • Gamesys Group – EGR Operators Awards ‘Safer gambling operator of the year’ (Highly Commended)
  • GVC Holdings (Now Entain) – EGR Operators Awards ‘Safer gambling operator of the year’
  • EGR North America – ‘Safer gambling provider of the year’

Thanks to the strict rules laid out by the UKGC, these companies have adjusted their platforms to adhere to safer gambling for their members. The results have meant these big brand names in casinos have landed prestigious awards for safe gambling operations.

The white paper also impressively reflects the UKGC’s commitment to UK players

If you have been staying up to date with the latest gambling news, then you’ve almost certainly seen the new gambling white paper. Yes, it has sparked some controversy. Even I have been a huge critic.

However, after reading the full Review of the Gambling Act 2005, which was a mammoth 166 pages, there is no denying that a lot more work goes into the formation of the UK gambling laws than just the negatives surrounding affordability checks, reduction in game speeds, more control over bonuses and max bet limits. Yes, just reading those four areas of the white paper as a player may make your blood boil.

What I found most impressive are the areas of the report that focus on protecting minors from being exposed to gambling. This includes controlling ads across all media platforms and making sure the proper ‘Know your Customer’ checks are put in place to ensure underage citizens cannot gamble.

What’s more there is also a heavy emphasis on player safety, the way player funds are kept safe, anti-money laundering rules to prevent criminals from washing their money, and offering mediation and support to players that cannot afford the legal fees to go up against ultra-rich companies that own the casinos. On top of this, UK players are guaranteed fair terms and conditions, as the UKGC makes sure that the T&Cs published on a casino website are legally binding.

Take away the palaver surrounding the affordability checks and other areas that negatively affect our gaming and you can see why the UKGC has won the Great Place to Work® award.

Job satisfaction: Every day UJGC employees have a mission to help people by giving them an environment where only fair and trustworthy gambling sites can operate, while also preventing underage gambling, and making sure UK gamblers’ money is safe.
