Just 2 days into August 2023, there is plenty to report from the responsible gambling organisations helping the UK gambling entertainment market stay reputable.

In today’s UK responsible gambling coverage, there’s good news for cryptocurrency casino players who also enjoy trading cryptos on the side. Or maybe it’s the other way around, and you trade by day and gamble by night.

Adding to the good news are plenty of stats too. The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has contributed a multi-million Sterling budget to GambleAware, which is open to applications from organisations that could use the cash injection to help gambling addiction.

In more news, the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has released a report covering the multi-million Sterling sums its members have injected into British horse racing.

Plus, with the revision to the UK Gambling Act via the white paper rolling out, responsible gambling is a hot topic, so GamStop has also recently rattled the industry’s news grapevine. At the bottom of this UK gambling news update, you’ll find stats for 2022 versus 2023 GamStop registrations.

The UK is super strict when it comes to preventing problem gambling and rightly so. That’s why all the platforms on the online live casino UK list here are regularly complimented for being some of the most trustworthy in the world.

UK Government Disagrees Crypto Trading is Gambling

Well, the sub-title gives it all away. However, the fact that the matter was even taken before parliament is baffling. Why not crypto if the London Stock Exchange (LSE) is allowed?

Some may argue that crypto is volatile, but have you seen the FTSE100 Index? It is just as volatile. All you need to do is open Yahoo or Google Finance and compare the two. If anything, Bitcoin looks less volatile. Then there’s the NASDAQ100 and Dow30 from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and numerous ETFs. Some in the British government saw crypto for what it is. The government made the correct decision.

Disclaimer: I do not encourage crypto or stock investments. This statement is simply my opinion on classing crypto trading as gambling in the UK.

BGC Members Contribute £455m to Horse Racing in the UK

According to a Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) report, in the 2022/23 fiscal year, its members contributed £455 million to British horse racing via a levy, sponsorships, and media agreements. There was a further. £125 million that came from bookmakers who advertised events across the country.

Money earned through media has risen by £45 million YoY versus the 2021/22 fiscal year, which came to £340m. Therefore, if my maths is correct, media in 2022/23 contributed £390 million of the £455 million. And since the 2016/2017 fiscal year, levy payments will have increased from £50 million to £99 million.

Michael Dugher, CEO of the BGC, said: “BGC members in the regulated betting industry are now paying more towards British horseracing than ever before, despite a 10.3 per cent reduction in betting turnover on racing in the last five years.

GambleAware to Receive Millions from Gambling Lavy: Open application for charities

The new White Paper will place a mandatory levy on operators in the UK. A portion of the monies collected are allocated to GambleAware. The total so far is £32.84 million. As a result, organisations in the UK can apply to receive some of these funds.

Applications for Funds: GambleAware has an open invitation for applications concerning its System Stabilisation Fund (SSF). For more information about how to apply, see the applications for gambling harms System Stabilisation Fund page on the GambleAware website.

GamStop Sees a 12% Increase in UK Players Registering

In the latest GamStop report, there was a 12% rise in people registering for its self-exclusion service. An even higher stat was the 30% rise in those aged between 16 and 24 registering. These figures compare to 2022, and we are only in H1 of 2023.

The organisation links all gambling establishments under the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) to a central database. Land-based and online players can register with GamStop and self-exclude themselves from real money gambling. Once someone triggers the self-exclusion, he or she cannot gamble at UK establishments. Although this does not prevent players from playing video slots in pubs and clubs, it does act as a deterrent for online gamblers who can easily access mobile gambling.

Subject H1 2023 2022 % Change
Registrations 48,000 42,857 12%
Registrations (16-24 years old) 10,080 7,754 30%
Total Registrations 390,000 306,000 27.45%
