Round-Up of Online Sports Betting in Illinois

This mid-June, the much-anticipated sports betting results from Illinois are now finally available. It is evident that Illinois has been among the hottest markets in 2021 but it could not avoid the slowdown in April occasioned by March Madness betting the preceding month. According to the results, the total handle was down by 15.2% to 537.2 million dollars from the all-time high recorded in March. Similarly, according to the state report, sports betting income also dropped at a much lower rate by 1.6 percent to 43.6 million dollars. This implies that hold up was brought to 8.1% which is the highest record for Illinois sportsbook since January whose total tax income was 7.1 million dollars.

Expect Lower IL Sports Betting Results

There is a high possibility that the 537.2 million dollars bet recorded in April will be the high mark for IL until NFL betting recommence full-time by September. This is because summer is usually the slowest period for all US sports betting with NHL and NBA playoffs wrapping up around that time. Oftentimes, only MLB remains the major sports action during summer, and this summer will not be an exception.

One of the possibilities of this lower sports betting result is that Illinois will feel a self-imposed hit due to its lack of remote registration because JB Pritzker, Governor of Illinois did not renew the emergency order which allowed remote registration in early April. It is currently not clear how much of the dropoff in April is caused by the lack of mobile registration because the March – April handle drop in Illinois was not as big as the one recorded in other states.

Other nearby states recorded bigger drops including a 26% fall in Michigan sports betting handle and a 25% Indiana sportsbook handle hit. The smaller percentage drop Illinois recorded in contrast to the other two states might be because it does not permit betting on in-state colleges.  It is likely that in-state college betting will still come to Illinois but a puzzling in-person requirement may be included.

A Slight Increase Recorded in Retail Betting

Whether it was a dropoff in in-state college bettors, the end of remote registration, or people just feel more confident after taking COVID-19 vaccines, retail betting recorded a major boost in April. A total of 14.7 million dollars bet was recorded on tier 1 wagers (pregame bets usually places on a game’s final outcome) at retail sportsbooks. This figure represents 2.7 percent of the total handle which in-state college betting will eventually be limited to if the bill is passed.  If we join tier 2, then the total retail betting will be 23.9 million total which accounts for 4.5 percent of the total handle; a 3.9% increase from what was recorded in March.

FanDuel Sportsbook Leads in The Online Illinois Sports Betting Market

With 176.9 million dollars which represents 34.5 percent of the 513.2 million dollars online market, FanDuel Sportsbook assumed the position as the leader in Illinois online sportsbook. FanDuel overtook DraftKings Sportsbook to clinch the top spot as the latter recorded a share slide in April and a 33.5% fall in its online handle share in March from 42.3 percent it recorded earlier in February.

DraftKings’ online handle was 32.2 percent share of the online market at 165.4 million dollars. BetRivers is the third on the list with 14.1 percent (72.3 million dollars) of online share handle while Barstool Sportsbook is fourth on the list. The company claimed the position in its maiden full month of IL sports betting with 9.8 percent of the market which is 50.3 million dollars in the online handle.
